Interpretation of the story behind the statue

Back in time until 1984, on the eve of National Day. At that time, Qian Shiyuan, Chen Yunlong and Shi Binggui of Fenghua Zhengmao were on the site of the sculpture production of the "Eight Girls" in Wulin Square. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of National Day, 10 sculpture elites from the original Hangzhou City Sculpture Creation Studio spent 3 months designing and collectively creating the beautiful "Eight Girls" statue, and completed the sculpture installation process within half a year. .

In Hangzhou, there are countless people who take pictures with the "eight girls" for more than 30 years, but not many people can really tell the meaning of the statue. On the morning of the 15th, at the site of the Wulin Square site, Qian Shiyuan, who was in his 70s this year, revealed the "secret" of the statue:

8 sculptures are divided into two groups, with 3 in the middle and 5 in a circle. "One symbolizes the completion of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and the second commemorates the liberation of Hangzhou on May 3, 1949."

The eight "girls" in the sculpture perform their duties: three in the middle dance with silk in hand dance; five around, playing pipa, sheng, guzheng, flute and 篜 篌. "Not only highlight the national characteristics of the five girls, but also symbolize that Hangzhou is the 'Silk Capital'."

In Qian Shiyuan's memories, Hangzhou that night was really empty. Over the next 20 years, the "Eight Girls" became the "standard" for tourists visiting Hangzhou. Many Zhejiang "70s" and "80s" have a group photo with the "Eight Girls".

30 years of wind and rain, the cement has been weathered continuously, the statue has been repaired many times, and the "eight girls" are gradually vicissitudes. In 2012, with the construction of Wulin Square Subway Station and Wulin Square Underground Mall, the "Eight Girls" had to bid farewell to everyone.

Time passed, and 32 years passed in a blink of an eye. Qian Shiyuan, Chen Yunlong, and Shi Binggui have long been covered with wind and frost, but their care for the "eight girls" has never changed. The restoration of the statue officially began in May 2013. The sculpture builder specially hired three of them as art consultants.

From the moment of construction, the words "original" have become the guiding ideology of the reconstruction of the statue. The shape of the new "Eight Girls" maintains its former classic shape, and its position, size and style remain unchanged. The three "girls" in the middle have a base up to 7 meters high, and the five "girls" in the middle have a base over 3 meters high.

In view of the easy weathering of cement sculptures, three old artists unanimously proposed that the restored statue should be made of stainless steel. The reporter learned from the millstone company that the statue uses "316 cold-rolled stainless steel", which has strong corrosion resistance and high durability. "It will not change for a hundred years."

Because the subway will be opened in the underground of Wulin Square, in order to eliminate hidden dangers, the stainless steel statue is designed to be hollow, and the weight is reduced from 50 to 60 tons to 8 tons, reducing the pressure on the square. Hangzhou Huayi Fountain Company, which is responsible for the construction of the fountain, said that the new version of the music fountain system has a total of 791 various types of nozzles, and 441 stainless steel LED underwater color-changing lights, which can spray up to 36 meters high. In order to ensure water quality, the fountain also added a water treatment and purification system, and made a drop effect, the water flow fell from a height, and the whole fountain was more three-dimensional.

New Wulin Square "May Day" unveiled

The "Eight Girls" statue will also undergo some debugging and will officially meet with the citizens of Hangzhou on May 1. Also on the same day, there was the new Wulin Square that attracted much attention.

As one of the G20 Hangzhou Summit projects in Xiacheng District, the ground landscape of Wulin Square has completed 70% -80% progress, including large-scale tree planting, pipeline embedding and other projects.
